Pigs-post

These 2 are making a run for it! Just kidding...the pigs are our partners here at the farm in controlling our worst enemy, the plum curculio beetle. The poison that non-organic orchards use to control the beetle works extremely effectively. But it kills absolutely everything else as well. We invested in Large Blacks from Northern England and Berkshires. They're a docile pig that doesn't root and make great moms. At any given time we have 200 pigs that go on patrol in the orchard, eat the fallen apples that have been infected with the beetle and completely digest the larvae. Thanks to the pigs, our beetle kill record is now more effective than the nasty chemical!
